Building Regulation Principal Designer (BRPD)
Since October 2023, every project requiring Building Regulations approval must appoint a Building Regulations Principal Designer (BRPD) the duty holder responsible for planning, managing and monitoring design work to ensure compliance with Building
Regulations throughout the project.
At ABUK, our BRPD service is not a separate appointment.
We are already part of the design team, shaping the MEP strategy, managing information, and coordinating the wider design team. That means Building Regulations compliance is embedded into design decisions as they are made, not tracked retrospectively. We maintain the Golden Thread as a live, auditable record. We manage change control to ensure that every design decision affecting compliance is captured and approved. And we prepare and support Gateway submissions with the documentation evidence that the Building Safety Regulator requires.
Without BRPD sign-off, a completion certificate cannot be issued. Make sure yours is in safe hands from day one.
Building Regulations Principal Designer (BR‑PD)
The Building Regulations Principal Designer (BR‑PD) is a statutory dutyholder role introduced under the Building Safety Act 2022. ABUK will plan, manage and coordinate the design process to ensure full compliance with the Building Regulations and will manage the preparation and submission of all required documentation to Building Control.
Designers
ABUK will review and confirm that all appointed designers have the right skills, knowledge, experience and organisational capability to fulfil their duties. This will be undertaken using ABUK’s competency assessment and designer questionnaire process.
Building Regulations Compliance
ABUK will establish and maintain a Building Regulations compliance tracker to monitor, record and evidence how the design achieves compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
Coordination
ABUK will coordinate the design team to ensure that all elements of the design are aligned, coordinated and collectively demonstrate compliance with the Building Regulations as a single, coherent scheme.
Building Control Application
From the outset, ABUK will determine the appropriate Building Control route for the project and will prepare, coordinate and submit the required information and documentation to support the application and secure approval.
05
Liaison with Building Control
ABUK will liaise with the all Building Control Body or Building Safety Regulator, as applicable, to support the review process and secure acceptance that the project complies with the Building Regulations.
06
Construction
At completion, ABUK will provide the required compliance and completion statements to the Client and issue the necessary completion notices to the Building Control Body, supporting regulatory sign‑off and successful project completion on site.
