Sustainability & Energy Strategy

ABUK Group delivers integrated sustainability and energy strategy services for residential and commercial projects across London. Integrated sustainability and energy strategy for London’s built environment. Net zero carbon, Part L, TM59 and whole life carbon shaped from day one, not retrofitted at the end.

At ABUK, sustainability is not a box to tick at planning. It is a design input.

Sustainability targets that are set late in the design process are expensive to meet, difficult to build, and rarely achieve what was intended. ABUK embeds energy strategy and sustainability thinking from the earliest project stages — typically from RIBA Stage 1 so that the right decisions are made before they become costly to change. We work across the full range of sustainability requirements that apply to London’s

residential and commercial development landscape: from Part L compliance and overheating assessments to BREEAM, NABERS and whole life carbon analysis. Our sustainability team works in close coordination with our MEP engineers, which means energy strategies are not produced in isolation — they are developed alongside the building services design and tested against buildability, programme and operational reality.

Our approach is rooted in practical outcomes. We do not produce sustainability statements that sit in a planning folder and are never acted upon. We develop strategies that can be implemented, costed, and verified — and we support clients through to completion, ensuring that what was committed at planning is what gets built and certified.

What this means in practice?

The Building Regulations Principal Designer (BR‑PD) is a statutory dutyholder role introduced under the Building Safety Act 2022. ABUK will plan, manage and coordinate the design process to ensure full compliance with the Building Regulations and will manage the preparation and submission of all required documentation to Building Control.

01

Early-stage energy strategy:

Establish the energy and sustainability framework at RIBA Stage 1–2, aligning with planning policy, client targets and programme requirements before design is fixed.

02

Compliance and assessment:

Deliver Part L, TM59 overheating, SAP and SBEM calculations, BREEAM pre-assessments, and sustainability statements coordinated with the wider design team.

03

Whole life carbon and net zero:

Provide whole life carbon analysis, NABERS and HQM assessments, and net zero carbon strategies aligned with client commitments and funder requirements.

04

Coordination and evidence:

Integrate sustainability outputs with the MEP and design management workstreams to ensure compliance is embedded, evidenced, and deliverable on site.

Carbon reduction strategy and reporting

Sustainability requirements in the UK continue to evolve rapidly from the Future Homes Standard and Building Safety Act obligations to the growing expectation of net zero carbon commitments from funders, planning authorities and housing associations. ABUK’s sustainability service is structured to meet today’s requirements while keeping pace with what is coming. Whether you need a straightforward BREEAM assessment or a comprehensive net zero carbon strategy developed from RIBA Stage 1, we deliver it as part of an integrated team — not as a standalone report.
